ROC Nijmegen is a governmental funded organisation offering secondary vocational education and training (VET) ROC Nijmegen is licensed in some 350 different courses in the area of Technology, Economic, Healthcare and Social care.
Some 15.000 students are working on their career at ROC Nijmegen and nearby 1100 members of staff are employed. Special on the Dutch VET system is the merger with general adult education. These two systems are joined in the ROC. Therefore the ROC’s are enabled to offer not just vocational education and general adult education but also tailor-made courses for people who want to return to labour market and to those who want to upgrade their working life skills.
In Nijmegen all opportunities for life long learning are available and more and more elaborated to use.
Adult education of basic skills in Nijmegen
In different cities we give lessons to people with a low education level. The lessons are nearby their houses and during the day or the evening. This students learn for example reading and writing in their own language, calculating, English, computer and social skills, all on different levels. The aim of these lessons is: to learn the students skills they need in our society, to increase their self-confidence and independence.
To attract the target group of low educated people is sometimes very difficult. The reasons therefore are: shammed, isolation, uncertainness, taboo, not accepted, negative experience at primary or secondary school, lack of information about the learning possibilities.
During about 2 years we use ambassadors to attract the low-educated people. They tell their life story in different situations and through recognition other students are attracted to our courses. This year we also started with mentors in a group. The mentor guides a new student in the group. In this way we try to retain the new students.
